This course is designed to teach students the basic fundamentals of a band instrument (Brass, Woodwind and Percussion). The course covers selections and care of instruments, correct playing position, reading music, and awareness of rhythm and pitch. Students will be placed into appropriate band classes by the band director after an interview to see what instrument is appropriate for the student’s physical skills. There is no prior study or prerequisite needed for participation in the band program. Students are expected to practice regularly and will perform three concerts throughout the year. (Instrument arrangements will be made upon instrument selection.)
Mrs. Black teaches the beginning woodwind classes, including: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon.
Mr. Smith teaches beginning brass classes, including: trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba.
Mr. Wallace teaches the beginning percussion class.
Concert Band is designed to meet the needs of the growing band student. The course covers the improvement of the individual musician as well as the development of ensemble skills. Addition in this group is by audition only. (Students will furnish instruments.)
The Concert Band is taught by Mr. Smith with assistance by Mr. Wallace.
Symphonic Band is an advanced ensemble and meets the needs of the intermediate band student. The course covers the improvement of the individual musician, the development of ensemble skills, and prepares students for All-Region and UIL competition. Weekly sectionals are also employed to strengthen instrument skills as music becomes increasingly more difficult. Addition in this group is by audition only. (Students will furnish instruments.)
The Symphonic Band is taught by Mrs. Black with assistance by Mr. Smith and Mr. Wallace.
Wind Ensemble is the premiere band at Wester Middle School and meets the needs of the advanced band student. The course covers the continued improvement of technical ability in preparation for All Region competition, Centennial High School Band advancement, and improved ensemble performance. Weekly sectionals are also employed to strengthen instrument skills as music becomes increasingly more difficult. Addition in this group is by audition only. (Students will furnish instruments.)
The Wind Ensemble is taught by Mr. Smith with assistance by Mrs. Black and Mr. Wallace.
